This seriously is the best face mask for clearing out clogged pores. It’s easy to prepare and cost effective to make. Not only does it pull out impurities deep within the skin, but also brightens, refreshes and heals.

In natural medicine we use certain clays and charcoals internally and externally for detoxification. This is due to their excellent ability to draw out toxins – from the gut, mouth and skin.

Why Clay?

Not just any clay – we’re looking specifically at Bentonite Clay.

Also called Montmorillonite clay, this particular clay is is derived from volcanic ash. The largest known source of Bentonite Clay is found in Fort Benton, Wyoming, where numerous volcanos are present.

Bentonite is also called a ‘healing clay – and is not only an effective detoxifier, it also contains trace amounts of beneficial minerals beneficial such as silica, calcium, sodium, potassium and iron. It is a fine grey or cream powder that has a soft texture. You mix it with a little water to make a past and apply to the face.

Bentonite’s detoxifying action has been attributed to its ‘poly-cationic’ nature, which means it is positively charged – and it’s this action which leads to absorption of negative charge toxins. Research has shown that’s effective in helping to heal ulcers, dermatitis and skin lesions.

So without further ado, the recipe for the #1 Bentonite DIY Clay Mask:

  • 1 tablespoon bentonite clay (we recommend Earths Purities Drink, Body & Bath Bentonite Clay).

  • Enough water to make a paste consistency (approx. 1-2 tbsp)

  • Apply to face and neck, leave on for 5 - 10 mins prior to it becoming fully dried, then rinse with warm water. For dryer skin types, apply a warm wet compress to remove the clay.

  • Follow with a nourishing face oil.

In order to allow the clay optimum access through the pores, it helps to place a warm wet flannel over the face to heat and steam the pores open – then apply the mask.

Optimal extras to add, should you choose:

  • Squeeze of lemon juice for vitamin C, brightness and acidity to fight off bacteria

  • 1 tsp. of collagen powder (we recommend Gelpro Marine Collagen).

  • 1/4 tsp. of charcoal for detoxification of impurities
