Eco Tan Face Tan Water
— Face Tan Water
Haven’t you heard? Sun beds are out. As our translucent bodies head into spring, all we have left in the cold winters are tan in a can or the occasional spray.
Cue Eco Tan. A certified organic tanning range that we can use on our faces! Face Tan Water was awarded gold in the 2016 UK Pure Beauty Awards as the Best New Sun Care and Tanning Product and was the winner in the Natural Tanning Category in the 2017 Janey Loves Platinum Awards. Now that’s some hype.
The product is essentially a gradual liquid self-tanning toner, specifically created for face, neck and décolletage areas. Its aim is to build skin radiance and reduce the need to wear foundation as is helps with evening skin tone and hyper-pigmentation.
It’s entry level price point of $34.95 has a dual action of self-tanning and toning the skin, so it sits in your routine after cleansing and prior to moisturising.
It’s recommended for use 2-3 times a week, and normal rules of exfoliation apply for 24 hours prior to use. If you know your skin doesn’t like to be exfoliated that often due to sensitives, irritability or congestion, this may not be the product for you, as self-tans generally need gentle exfoliation for optimal results. Although the product is recommended for all skin types due to its non-comedogenic formulation (meaning it does not clog the pores), yet we would still recommend you test patch.
Who are Eco Tan?
Eco Tan made Australian history by becoming the first and only certified organic tanning manufacturer by the Organic Food Chain under the Australian government. The brand was awarded winner of Best Global Organic Beauty Brand by Lux Global Excellence Awards. It’s a pretty incredible achievement for such a niche range.
They are accredited toxic free by Safe Cosmetics Australia and Choose Cruelty Free. Eco Tan are proudly using only natural and organic ingredients and specify the derivatives of each on their ingredient listings.
The fragrance of Face Tan Water is strong – as you’d imagine a self-tanning product could be. It’s difficult to smell the rose geranium, particularly as this is the main ingredient, which is surprising. There is a powerful orange smell however, but the general consensus seems to be that the efficacy outweighs this.
The texture is a runny liquid; a similar consistency to a toner if you have one in your current skincare routine. It applies evenly and dries fast on the skin.
A common concern for all self-tanners is if the product will turn them orange. One application of this product creates a beautiful glow, with no streaks and no stains on the pillow case. Skin tone is noticeably more even and brightened after a few applications.
To reiterate, although this product is suitable for all skin types, it’s worth understanding that to get best results you need to be mildly exfoliating every few days. If you’re skin is prone to irritation from regular exfoliation, it’s worth exploring a routine that will help you create a clean surface to apply the product.
Rose Geranium, a flower oil obtained from the flowers of Pelargoniumgraveolens which is used for the treatment of ageing, particularly wrinkled and dry skin.
Hyaluronic Acid is naturally occurring within your body’s tissues. Its water-binding and water-attracting properties fill up the spaces between collagen and elastin fibers in the skin.
Aloe Vera a smoothing incredibly soothing and anti-inflammatory plant extract.
Orange Peel, an antioxidative and anti-inflammatory extract from Citrus Aurantium Dulcis.
None (that’s a first!).

Rose Geranium is dermatologically used for the treatment of ageing, particularly wrinkled and dry skin, due to its ability to minimise the appearance of wrinkles through tightening facial skin. Its antibacterial and anti-fungal properties allow rose geranium oil to fight external infection, and enhances skin by fighting inflammatory conditions such as acne and dermatitis. This ingredient in Face Tan Water is certified organic.
Hyaluronic Acid, also known as Sodium Hyaluranate, has bas a must-have in your skincare routine, and it definitely is. HA is naturally occurring within your body’s tissues, especially the ones in your face. Its water-binding and water-attracting properties fill up the spaces between collagen and elastin fibers in the skin, resulting in hydration and more youthful looking skin. Sodium Hyaluronate has smaller molecular size to Hyaluronic Acid, making it easier to be absorbed by the skin. It promotes blood circulation and nutrient absorption, making your products that have this ingredient penetrate much deeper into the skin. This ingredient in Face Tan Water is certified organic.
Aloe Vera is incredibly soothing for many skin types, and serves as an anti-inflammatory. It’s incredibly hydrating due its high-water content and includes many rich antioxidants such as Vitamin A, Vitamin E, and Vitamin C, as well as active enzymes that nourish the skin surface. Many manufacturers find this ingredient particularly useful in large quantities due to its effectiveness as a skin moisturiser, as well as its ability to cool the skin. Not only is this music to a beach-goer’s ears, but those who naturally hold more heat in their skin will benefit from buying skincare products that use Aloe Vera as a core component. This ingredient in Face Tan Water is certified organic.
Orange Peel is rich in flavonoids known to attribute antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties coupled with their capacity to regulate enzyme function. The skin brightening properties found in orange peel is due to its high levels in Vitamin C, more concentrated in the peel than in the fruit. This ingredient in Face Tan Water is certified organic.
No ingredients in this formulation are cause for a red-flag, particularly because the brand is also transparent regarding their percentage of certified organic ingredients. Products require at least 70% of ingredients to be certified organic in order to market their brand as organic, and Eco Tan have claimed that 90% of their ingredients meet this requirement.
The brand also promotes they are vegan-friendly, indicating that the emulsifying ingredients are plant derived. For example, Polyglycerol Ester is comprised of many glycerine molecules and fatty acids, to emulsify water and oil. The fatty acid component is usually animal or plant derived. It is also possible to get glycerine and fatty acid from petroleum, therefore it’s important to understand the origin of ingredients prior to using it. As Eco Tan is certified organic and vegan-friendly, we can assume that this ingredient is derived from plant sources.
