First impressions

Fragrance
The fragrance of the Age Defiance Age Serum is quite potent – particularly due to the Frankincense essential oil. Specifically, it can be described as warm, resinous and earthy with a slightly fruity undertone.

Texture:
The texture is light, and it is fast-absorbing into the skin, leaving the skin dry to the touch.

Efficacy:
The lightweight serum is an easy addition into a day and night routine for someone who is targeting the effects of ageing. Depending on the health of your skin and whether it is sensitive or prone to any conditions, is what will affect the efficacy of this product.

More sensitive skin types may not respond well to the large amount of ingredients in this formula, particularly with the addition of vitamin C and Argireline. The nature of some of the active peptides may be efficient for a while, however may begin to slowly fade.

The Good

Aloe Vera is incredibly soothing for many skin types, and serves as an anti-inflammatory. It’s incredibly hydrating due its high-water content and includes many rich antioxidants such as Vitamin A, Vitamin E, and Vitamin C, as well as active enzymes that nourish the skin surface. Many manufacturers find this ingredient particularly useful in large quantities due to its effectiveness as a skin moisturiser, as well as its ability to cool the skin. Not only is this music to a beach-goer’s ears, but those who naturally hold more heat in their skin will benefit from buying skincare products that use Aloe Vera as a core component.

Kakadu Plum contains over 3000mg of Vitamin C per 100g of fruit. It’s reported that the plum contains 55 times more Vitamin C than oranges. The Vitamin C in Kakadu works to produce collagen, reduce wrinkles, smooth out the skin and aid in general anti-ageing.  Kakadu Plum also shows high antioxidant levels - around 5 times more potent than the blueberry. Antioxidants are crucial for stimulating collagen production and ensuring that skin remains plump and moisturised

Magnesium ascorbyl phosphate (Vitamin C) acts as an antioxidant to protect your skin against free radical damage from the environment. It’s also an essential nutrient for collagen production with free radicals tend to destroy. Vitamin C a key ingredient in anti-ageing skincare as it brightens and smooths the complexion from hyperpigmentation, as well as provides treatment to photo-damaged skin from UV rays.

The Questionable

Argireline is an acetyl hexapeptide, mimicking one of the proteins that are involved in the SNARE complex. It’s a lab-made peptide by a company called Lipotec, that believe that with the manufacture of this protein, they are able to destabilise it. Unfortunately, there’s not much in the way of research that isn’t sponsored by Lipotec to assert that it is ‘botox in a jar’.

The only other independent study that we found on the conflicting side of Argireline’s benefits is a 2013 Chinese randomised, placebo-controlled study that notes contradictions and concludes that although it is somewhat effective and safe to use, the ability for the peptide to seep into the skin is not adequate. Although there’s nothing ‘bad’ about this ingredient, there may be more beneficial, targeted ingredients to do the trick. The ingredient can also be of harm to those with sensitivities, so we recommend to patch test prior to use.
